Position Details:

The Bay Area Environmental Research Institute, a non-profit organization focused on enabling research in earth and space science, is looking for an experienced PHP & Drupal developer, either part time or full time, to join the Earth Science Projects Office (ESPO) web development team. The team operates in a flexible work environment and is based at the NASA Ames Research Center in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Duties and Responsibilities:

We are looking for a developer to help us support a PHP/MySQL based website, the Suborbital Flight Request System, for the NASA Airborne Science Program (ASP). The full time position will also include work on a variety of Drupal 7 websites for the ASP https://airbornescience.nasa.gov/ and the ESPO https://espo.nasa.gov/.

The successful candidate will work with a small team of developers to maintain ESPO supported websites. As a key member of the ESPO development team, you’ll be involved in the development of new features, from design to implementation and documentation.  We strive to make the websites reflect user-friendly features and design.  Our websites leverage a combination of custom and contributed PHP libraries and Drupal modules to provide our users with a variety of features, including the flight request system, a data archive, mission logistical support, and aircraft activity planning and tracking.

To thrive in this job, you should enjoy working independently on some projects and jointly with your team on others to help produce solutions that support our scientific community and NASA earth science research.  Success in this requires excellent time management and communication skills.

All of this helps ensure you are able to provide user support to a diverse customer base (from scientists to technicians). To help achieve this you will be expected to trouble-shoot existing features and resolve issues by implementing new features and bug fixes. To be successful in this task, you must understand customer needs, and strive to provide the highest quality customer support.

  • Extensive PHP programming experience (3 – 5 years, minimum).
  • 3 – 5 years of experience with MySQL.
  • Full-time position requires 3-5 years experience with Drupal 7 and/or 8

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent time-management skills to work on projects with multiple and competing priorities.
  • Exceptional communication skills to coordinate work with team members, and support the user community.
  • Experience providing technical support to users with a wide range of computer experience.
