Oxfam is an international confederation of 18 organizations networked together in more than 90 countries, as part of a global movement for change, to build a future free from the injustice of poverty. Our Secretariat is based in Oxford, with advocacy and campaigns offices in Washington DC, New York, Brussels, Geneva, Brasilia and a liaison office with the Africa Union in Addis Ababa.

This post will be part of the OI Secretariat Public Engagement team and can be based wherever we have an Oxfam office around the world or even remote. Other than in the UK, location is subject to agreement with a local Oxfam office and is not agreed in advance, but we aim to offer this position wherever there is an OI office or affiliate including our new office in Kenya.

Oxfam International is looking for a Web Developer

The successful applicant will have significant experience of developing and maintaining high performance Drupal websites and an interest in working for an ethical organization in a public engagement team. You will be an experienced PHP developer with extensive knowledge of the Drupal API, possibly theming and test-driven development practices. Experience working in a non technical team is not a pre-requisite, but a willingness to do so is highly desirable - as well as the enthusiasm to work collectively for best outcomes. Next year, we expect to embark on an upgrade project that will involve reviewing our whole technical architecture and making recommendations for moving our technology forward to meet the requirements of our public engagement in the best way possible to achieve our objectives.

Team Purpose

The OI Digital Engagement Team manages the Oxfam International global websites and global digital content. The team collaborates on social media production, including creative content production. The Digital Engagement Team also manages the country and affiliate website products ‘starter kit and click & go’ including providing some capacity building to country, program and affiliate staff. The OI Senior Digital Engagement Manager leads and supports the cross Oxfam global digital strategy including managing the cross Oxfam Digital Engagement Group.

Job Purpose - Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The primary purpose of this role is to work with the Oxfam International Digital Engagement Team to maintain and develop OI’s websites in line with organizational & technical requirements to meet end-user needs and to create and maintain a technical road map for this. All of our websites are currently built in Drupal. This role will also provide technical support and advice to OI’s global and specialist teams where appropriate and guidance on best practice in web design and development and work closely with other developers across Oxfam to exchange ideas and share resource where appropriate.

Act as the technical authority and main developer of Oxfam International’s multilingual website oxfam.org and Click & Go distribution as well as related tools.

Maintain https://www.oxfam.org and Click & Go and related tools to meet technical/security requirements, business requirements and end-user needs.

Work with the Consultant Systems Administrator to ensure that the website and all other digital tools are provided in a high security, high performance environment.

Work with other IT departments and external developers to create integrated technical solutions to meet global digital requirements as required.

Contribute to the work of the wider OI Secretariat public engagement team and to the wider planning and direction of Oxfam International, through input to OI team meetings and consultation.

This role will need to work occasional evenings and weekends as well as travel

Technical Skills, Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • PHP developer with knowledge of the Drupal API
  • A solid and evidenced understanding of front-end development: HTML, CSS, SASS and Compass,  Javascript/JQuery
  • Best-practice development processes: Git, Agile, test driven development processes, continuous integration
  • Experience running large, high performance Drupal sites: Nginx, MySQL optimization, memcached, Varnish, APC, etc.
  • Ability to set up and maintain technical workflow without support
  • Ability to take a rigorous approach to technical problem solving and documentation
  • Understanding of user driven development
  • Experience working within a non-technical team and ability to explain to help them problem solve and understand concepts
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
