About Budget Modifications For Your Car

The world of modified cars has become big business. As fun and satisfying as modifying your vehicle can be, you’re likely to pay out quite a substantial sum - not only for the parts themselves but for potential changes to your insurance premium. Nevertheless, some mods cost more than others, and there are ways to upgrade and enhance your ride without forking out staggering amounts.

Window Tinting

One of the most popular budget-friendly mods is window tinting. Not only do tinted windows make your ride look cool, but they can also help your car feel cool by repelling UV rays. Decreased heat levels will allow for a more comfortable ride and save your AC from working overtime. Window tinting can also provide extra safety in the unfortunate case of a shattered window by holding the shards together.

Cold Air Intake

Improved airflow can increase the performance of your ride. A cold air intake system can boost your engine power by drawing cool air (which has a higher oxygen density) into the combustion chamber - this is an inexpensive modification that can add a kick of power without the need for a supercharger, turbocharger or upgraded exhaust system.

Short-Throw Shifter

A faster car is more nuanced than simply “having more horsepower”. A short-throw shifter gives you maximum power by decreasing your gear shifting time, making it easier to keep engine revs high. A short shifter differs from a stock shifter by having shorter throws between gear positions. Reducing the angle of the gear shaft by changing the pivot point allows for tighter, shorter gear shifts.

Wraps and Decals

A cost-effective way to switch up the aesthetic of your ride is to opt for a respray, wrap or add decals. Of course, a whole body wrap could set you back thousands, but partial wraps can look just as smart and add a personal touch to your vehicle. Check your insurance policy before adding decals or stickers, as they could render your insurance void, depending on your provider.

High Ratio Steering Rack

A high ratio steering rack improves quality of steering by reducing the amount of driver wheel input per manoeuvre. A standard steering rack gives you lock-to-lock in around 3.5 turns, whereas a high ratio steering rack will reduce this to as little as 2.5. Particularly practical for rally or track racing, increasing the steering response can improve your performance significantly.

Coilovers

There are numerous ways to lower your car, the most expensive of which is installing air ride suspension. Springs are the most popular budget option; however, coilovers are generally more durable and adjustable. Although prices vary considerably, KW coilovers are a sensible choice regarding reliability, quality and value for money.

Racing Pedals

If the aesthetic of your interior is just as important as the exterior, you could replace your car’s standard pedals with racing pedals. Although this mod won’t make your ride any faster, it might just feel a little more like a high-speed supercar. Replacing your pedals is a quick and easy job that won’t cost the world.

Throttle Body

A throttle body controls the amount of air drawn into your engine. A larger throttle body will increase the engine’s air intake, providing the potential to deliver more horsepower. Upgrading your throttle body is a modification that goes hand in hand with adding a cold air intake system. Together, these mods can increase horsepower and even benefit fuel efficiency.

Polyurethane Bushings

Polyurethane bushings are significantly more durable than their standard rubber counterparts. Although rubber bushings contribute to a smoother ride and are therefore suited for everyday driving, polyurethane bushings are great for track drivers. This is due to improved handling and an enhanced road sensation, allowing the driver to feel how their vehicle reacts to the terrain.

LED Lighting

For a visually impressive, low-cost modification, you could give your car a futuristic aesthetic with ambient LED lighting in your foot-wells or under your seats. Interior lighting kits are inexpensive and only require base-level DIY skills to install. LED lights are incredibly power-efficient and won’t drain your battery when plugged into a 12v socket.
