About Low Income Families

How do I apply for a New York home improvement grant?

Low- and moderate-income homeowners, tenants and lenders, seniors, disabled persons, and senior citizens are eligible for home improvement grants, free roof repair for seniors or loans. These funds are subject to income, age, property type, and location. The first step is to contact federal, state, and county agencies that manage grant and loan programs. It is important to be informed promptly when applying for grant and loan programs. Most of them work on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find information and apply for funds at more than one location.

These programs are most often funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. The department has three offices in New York, Buffalo, and Albany.

The following link provides more information about the programs offered by the company:

Another place you can find information about the available options and eligibility requirements is The National Residential Improvement Association. The association compiles information about a wide range of programs and conducts research.

How do I apply for a New York solar grant?

New York has some of the best solar incentives in America. It is important to go solar in 2021 to reduce carbon emissions and lower your monthly energy bills.

The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit, or ITC, is a federal policy that encourages the use of solar energy in America. Thi`s policy provides a 26 percent tax credit that can be claimed against the tax liability of solar systems installed on residential or commercial properties. An average 5 KW system costs $14,994.00 in New York. If you use the ITC, your total cost will be $11,096.00. This credit can be applied to your taxes when you buy solar systems and have them installed on your roofs.

This is the percentage you can get:

26 percent for projects which begin construction in 2021 or 2022

22 percent for projects which begin construction in 2023

The residential credit will drop to zero after 2023 and the commercial credit will fall to a permanent 10%.

You must meet the following criteria to apply for this credit:

If the electricity generated is not more than your home's electricity use, the solar PV system will be installed at your primary or second residence in the United States.

The solar PV system is yours (i.e. you bought it with cash or financing, but you are not leasing the system nor in an arrangement to buy electricity from a system that you don't own).

The solar PV system is either new or being used in its first use. Only the original installation of the solar equipment is eligible for credit.

The New York State Solar Energy Equipment Credit covers 25% of qualified solar energy system equipment expenses and is limited to $5,000.00. Some NY taxpayers may be eligible for this credit, which is non-refundable. This form can be used to start the application process.

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) offers a megawatt Block Program to residential solar projects in New York. It offers up $1,000.00 per KW of installed solar power. This program offers a rebate of up to $1,000 per watt for residential and commercial solar panels.

The Solar Electric Generating System tax abatement, or SEGS, provides a tax reduction for properties that use solar energy. The compliance period for the solar electric generating systems is the year that the property tax abatement begins and the three years immediately following. The NYC Department of Buildings determines eligibility.

NYSERDA's NY Sun program offers funding from multiple sources to make solar energy more affordable. It works directly with developers and solar contractors. This program is first-come, first-served.

How do I obtain a grant for my debt?

Even though a grant to pay off your debt is not possible, there are still options available in New York for consolidating your debts. Numerous credit counselors can offer debt consolidation programs to lower your interest rates, such as high-interest credit card debts. A debt consolidation loan is another option. This allows you to pay off all your outstanding debts with one payment. A third option is debt settlement, where a debt negotiator negotiates a settlement with creditors.

A Debt Management Program may be the solution if you have unmanageable debt. With one monthly payment, you can pay off multiple creditors' debts. You can sign up for this program at any one of the agencies. They will negotiate better terms with each of your creditors. Your chosen agency will then receive the payment and distribute it on your behalf. A debt management plan does not constitute a loan. It is an agreement between creditors and debt management companies. This is not a grant but you can still save money on interest and fees. It is recommended that you seek the assistance of a credit counseling agency before agreeing to a debt management program. Debt Management Plans typically last between 36 and 60 months.

A Debt Consolidation loan is another financial option to consolidate your debts. You can get a loan to consolidate all your debts, and then pay one monthly payment to your lender. These loans typically have a lower interest rate and take between 2 to 5 years to pay back, depending on how much they are. You can either secure the loan with a car, a home or other property, or you can leave it unsecured.

Debt Settlement is the third option. A debt negotiator negotiates a settlement with your creditor. This settlement will reduce your credit card debts and loan principals by a significant amount. This is an alternative to bankruptcy.

A Balance Transfer credit card is a good option if you have credit card debts. This card usually comes with a promotional, low or zero percent interest rate. Some cases, it could last for as long as 24 months.

Money Management International, or MMI, offers financial counseling and education to those who are struggling with debt. Call 212-695-2941 to make an appointment. You can also call 866-550-88004 to get counseling. This number is available 24/7, seven days a week. To learn more, you can apply online by clicking the link below.

Do you qualify for homeowner grants?
You can get cash from the government, or any other grants, to pay rent, utilities and medical supplies, as well as transportation costs. Resources are available for single mothers, low-income families, disabled people, the unemployed, underemployed and other individuals in need. New York's utility, gas and electric companies offer energy bill assistance programs.

Low-income individuals can get assistance with heating their homes through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). This federally funded energy program is administered in New York City by the Human Resources Administration. A household's income, household size and primary heating source are all factors that determine eligibility for one benefit each year.
