About Beginner Mountain Biking Tips

Mountain biking is a fun and exhilarating activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. There are various different types of professional mountain biking you can get involved in, including downhill, endurance and freeride. However, most beginners will start following a mountain bike trail and having a go at the various jumps the trail has to offer. We have some great tips for beginner mountain bikers.

Research techniques

One of the first things you can do in your spare time before you even get on your bike is to watch videos online to learn mountain biking techniques. This will also be beneficial once you start riding and gain more confidence on the trail. There are thousands of videos on YouTube that can show you what to do and what not to do when mountain biking. Always look for videos that are within your current skill level. Large jumps and tricks might look easy when they’re performed by professionals, but it takes years and a lot of skill to be able to pull off stunts effortlessly. However, following the journey of a mountain bike professional can be interesting and give you something to aim towards.

Pick the right trails

Find trails that are suitable for beginners; many mountain bike trail centers will have several routes for bikers of all abilities. Start off on the beginner routes and work your way up to the more challenging trails. This way, you’re more likely to be able to complete the course without being injured and less likely to get in the way of more experienced riders that are suitable for the advanced routes. There’s nothing wrong with pushing yourself to get ahead but don't skip out essential steps as a beginner rider.

Get the right equipment

The equipment and protection you have will impact not only your performance but also your confidence. Your bike needs to be suitable for the type of riding you plan on doing; a road bike will not work for a mountain bike trail. If you’re unsure about what bike you need, visit a reputable bike shop that can advise you on your purchase. In addition to your bike, every mountain bike rider should wear a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads as a bare minimum. There are thousands of brands to choose from; if you plan on riding regularly, choose the best mountain bike elbow pads and other equipment you can afford. Your confidence will be boosted knowing that your body is protected by high-quality riding gear if anything happens. It’ll also last you much longer and minimize your injuries if you do come off your bike, which is highly likely as a beginner rider.

Join a group of riders

Mountain biking doesn’t need to be a solo sport; many riders go out in groups and push each other to take on harder trails. Joining a group of like-minded riders is a great way to learn new skills and make new friends at the same time. Experienced riders can give you hands-on practical advice to improve your riding skills. They will also be able to advise on equipment and how to set up your bike for various different trails. To find a local mountain biking group, you can look online at forums dedicated to the hobby or head over to a local bike shop and enquire about any meet-ups or social events for mountain biking enthusiasts. Alternatively, visit a local trail and speak to a few people before you start or when you stop for a break.

Enjoy yourself

One of the main things to remember when starting any new hobby is to enjoy yourself; hobbies are supposed to be fun and not a chore. If you get bored or frustrated with the same trails, try a new mountain bike center or travel to an area with open trails. Don’t get too bogged down with needing to be the best and training as hard as possible; leave that to the professional athletes. Mountain biking is a physically demanding activity, so you need to allow yourself enough time to rest and recover between rides. This will help prevent injury and reduce muscle soreness the next time you go for a bike ride.
