The best solution is the one the client actually understands
Designing complex architectures is one thing. Presenting them in a way that makes clients want to own the concept — that's another. We're looking for someone who can do both.
Must-haves
- Several years of experience in software development or system architecture
- Open source isn't an ideology to you — it's part of how you work
- Excellent German and English, written and spoken — in client conversations as much as in pitches
Your responsibilities
- You design solution architectures for pitches and tenders and present them to clients; clearly, for technical and non-technical audiences alike.
- You build prototypes when a concept needs to become tangible.
- You evaluate incoming requests: What's feasible? What does it realistically cost? Where does AI add value and where doesn't it.
- You work closely with Business Development and the engineering team, set priorities, sharpen proposals, and make sure concept and deliverability actually match.
- And you ensure clean handovers of won projects to the delivery team.
What you bring
- You think in systems, not in individual tools and you have the project experience to know how software development really works.
- You have opinions and the confidence to stand by them, with clients as much as internally.
- You can make complex architectures understandable in pitches, in tenders, in internal discussions and you do it convincingly, in writing and in person, in German and in English.
What sets you apart
- Experience with headless and API-first architectures, CRM integration, or marketing automation
- AI integration in real client projects
- Experience in regulated industries such as pharma or the public sector
- Pitch and tender experience on the agency or consulting side
An honest word
Right now, 90%+ of our projects are Drupal-based. The transformation towards becoming a platform and ecosystem partner is underway — but it isn't finished. That means you'll encounter legacy Drupal in the existing portfolio and build the future in pitches. A significant part of the work is genuinely understanding what's there before you start changing it.
The role sits within the Business Development team, but it delivers substance — not just storytelling. If your last few years have been mostly slide-building without designing or building anything yourself, you'll notice quickly. So will our clients: they can tell within the first hour whether someone has actually made real decisions.
Volkan and Stephan are the technical founders, and they remain so. You'll have real creative latitude — and two people behind you who have been building software for 20 years.
Working at Factorial
Digital ecosystems grow organically. And become chaotic. We reorganise them.
Factorial is a founder-led software agency for organisations that can no longer keep pace with their own growth: publishers with three identity systems, pharma companies with sixty CMS instances, NGOs whose data never quite comes together across CRM, newsletter tool, and website. We go to the root, not the surface.
Around 50 experts. Headquartered in Hamburg, with teams in Canada, Spain, Singapore, Italy, and Brazil. Since our founding in 2015, we've been an active part of the Drupal and open source community. Our clients come from media, pharma, and the non-profit sector — including C.H. Beck, dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Boehringer Ingelheim, and TelefonSeelsorge.
At Factorial, how we work together matters. We support each other and learn from each other. We treat every person with respect and without discrimination — regardless of background, ethnicity, religion, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other individual characteristic.
What we offer
We're not a family. But we have one.
Flexible working, remote or in our Hamburg office. An engineering team that knows what it's doing and stays curious. Real client projects from day one. And the opportunity to shape where Factorial goes next, technically and culturally.
Work-life balance is a given here, including in leadership roles, including part-time. We've been recognised for it by the Hamburger Allianz für Familien.
